GOOD QUESTIONS, STRAIGHT ANSWERS

Frequently asked questions

How do I start tracking?

Open DayReceipt and choose Enable Tracking in the welcome screen. If you skipped that step, open Settings → Tracking and turn on Enable foreground tracking. Make sure Pause tracking is off, then switch to another application.

DayReceipt excludes itself by default. Spending time inside DayReceipt will not add to your receipt unless you enable Track DayReceipt itself.

Why is my receipt empty or missing time?

DayReceipt only records foreground application time while its process is running and tracking is enabled. It cannot recover past Screen Time records, activity from before installation, or time while it was quit.

Check the live status and your tracking settings. Paused periods, excluded apps, sleep, and idle time beyond your selected threshold are not counted. Long unobserved gaps are conservatively excluded rather than backfilled.

Does DayReceipt keep tracking when I close the window?

Yes, while the DayReceipt process remains running. Closing the dashboard keeps the app available in the menu bar, unless you hide the menu bar icon in Settings. Choosing Quit DayReceipt ends recording. Launch at Login is optional.

How does idle detection work?

DayReceipt reads the system's idle duration through a public macOS API. The default threshold is five minutes, with options for 1, 3, 5, 10, or 15 minutes in Settings.

The selected grace period is included. Time beyond that boundary is excluded. Invalid or unavailable idle readings suspend tracking when idle detection is enabled. DayReceipt does not capture the contents of keyboard or mouse input.

Does it need Screen Recording or Accessibility access?

No. The core tracking feature does not require Screen Recording, Accessibility, or Input Monitoring permission. Optional daily reminders request notification permission only if you enable them.

How do I exclude an app or change its category?

Open Applications to search observed apps, change their category, or enable Exclude. Use Add Exclusion… to select an application manually. These choices affect future recording; they do not rewrite previously recorded durations or category snapshots.

How do I save, share, or print a receipt?

Open View Full Receipt or Export. Choose a theme, application limit, sorting, and optional receipt details. Use Save PNG… or Save PDF… to choose a destination.

Copy Receipt places an image on the clipboard. Share… opens the macOS sharing menu, and Print… opens the native print dialog. Available sharing destinations depend on your Mac.

How do I delete my history or export the raw data?

Open Settings → Data & privacy. Choose Export Activity Data as CSV… to save recorded intervals, or Delete All Activity Data… to remove activity records and daily notes after confirmation.

Deletion does not erase saved exports, backups, shared copies, clipboard images, or temporary sharing files. Application exclusions and preferences remain. Reset Preferences… is a separate action.

What is Demo Mode?

Preview Demo displays explicitly labeled sample activity. It is held in memory and never inserted into your actual activity history. Choose Exit Demo to return to your real records.

Are the daily verdicts generated by online AI?

No. Verdicts use a local collection of templates selected from recorded metrics. There are no AI API requests. Choose a humor personality or turn humor off in Settings.

Can I change themes without changing my history?

Yes. Themes, sorting, visible application limits, and humor are presentation preferences. The underlying recorded time remains unchanged. When a receipt groups smaller entries under Other Apps, their time remains included in the total.

How do I report a problem?

Email dayreceipt.support@proton.me. Include your macOS version, DayReceipt version, the steps you took, and what you expected to happen. If relevant, include the exact error message.

Do not send passwords or your complete activity history. Screenshots and exported receipts can reveal application usage or daily notes, so review and redact them before attaching. Nothing is attached automatically when you click an email link.
